Most people drive Highway 1 in five days. We took seventeen, and I’d argue that’s still not enough. Driving Highway 1 slowly changes what the road actually gives you — not a list of viewpoints checked off, but the specific quality of light on a particular Tuesday morning at Bixby Bridge, with nobody else pulled over yet.
Why We Slowed Down
The original plan was a fast run from Seattle to San Diego. Somewhere around the redwoods, standing under trees older than most countries, it stopped making sense to treat the drive as a delivery. We used the route plan and packing list from our own guide as a backbone and then simply stayed longer at anything worth staying for — three nights at Avenue of the Giants instead of one, two full days parked near Big Sur doing essentially nothing but reading and watching the fog roll off the water.
Big Sur, Unhurried
McWay Falls dropping straight onto the beach is the photograph everyone takes, and it deserves the reputation, but the quieter reward was pulling off at unmarked turnouts between the named viewpoints, where the cliffs drop just as dramatically and there’s no parking lot to share. Bixby Bridge at 6:45am, before the first tour van arrives, is a different bridge entirely from the one in every postcard.
What Slow Actually Costs
Seventeen days instead of five meant more nights of paid camping than we’d budgeted for, and a slower burn on fuel than we’d planned around. It also meant we arrived in San Diego without the exhausted blur that usually follows a long drive — genuinely sad to be finished rather than relieved.
This packing list and route map made the whole trip effortless logistically, which freed up the actual decision-making for where to linger. If you’re planning your own version, the full 21-day Highway 1 route plan and our Highway 1 road trip write-up have everything we used.
Would We Do It Again
Without hesitation. The only regret is not building in even more slack around San Francisco, which we treated as a single overnight when it easily deserved three or four days on its own, given everything within an hour’s drive of the city.
